For those who think that South America is home to only commies, coca, and Coffin Joe, think again. Would-be filmmakers from Columbia to Chile to the island of Cuba – are grabbing what equipment they can muster, including the new generation of DSLR’s (the type that are even being used occasionally on top stateside TV shows), and are making some noise in the horror film biz.The new wave of Asian horror from some years ago has subsided and has left a vacuum for the next horrifying thing. Could it be that South American horror will fill the void? Read this article from the June issue of the very bizarre UK alt-‘zine BIZARRE for some insight.

Observed in a UK book from 1976 that is otherwise filled with comic stories is the VALIANT BOOK OF MAGIC AND MYSTERY. Labeled "A Fleetway Annual" it is from a publishing group that printed a wide variety of comics-related books, including titles such as FRANKIE STEIN, SHIVER AND SHAKE, and MONSTER FUN.A feature inside MYSTERY AND MAGIC was "The Great Movie Monster Quiz". Instantly recognizable to any Monsterologist is the lettering style used in the title. Drawn by a fellow by the name of John Donnelly, he obviously drew his inspiration from a monster movie magazine from across the pond.

A couple of days ago I showed you an ad that featured Henry Daniell, character actor in many films, including a handful of horror and genre releases.Daniell had the perfect face to portray the villain and he did so in the most convincing of ways. His terrifyingly telegenic countenance was perfect for those late-night fear fests on the tube. Here he is on the cover of the French fan magazine, FANTAZINE. Daniel is pictured in his role of Dr.Emil Zurich in the 1959 Vogue Pictures release, THE FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE. He is shown with Paul Wexler as Zutai, his undead, head-shrinking Jivaro accomplice.[Source: MEDUSA FANZINE]

Like any other country, the Philippines has their own cast of resident mythological creatures and supernatural beings. The bestiary is comprised of the usual suspects: ghouls, vampires, were-creatures, and zombies, all generally evil and hungry for your flesh. This month's FHM magazine Philippines edition takes a stab (heh! heh!) at pitting one aswang (that's Pinoy for ghoul-like or vampire-like creature) against another in a giant monster throw-down.And last, but not definitely least, is another mythological creature -- The Elusive and Unobtainable 2-Dimensional Pin-Up Girl. This particular devilish species is named Chiaka Morita. She is also featured in this month's Philippines edition of FHM.

An apparent sideline of Hantik Films is a new French print magazine entitled GRAUSAM ROUGE (CRUEL RED). It's a sparse 20 A4-size pages, but advertising claims they are in "Hi-Def". The contents is written in several languages, including English. Looks like most, if not all of the issue is dedicated to the film, FRIGHT NIGHT.Ordering information is HERE.
