VFX FRANKENSTEIN BUST EXCLUSIVE FIRST PHOTO

Posted by 1001web

Soon to be unleashed upon the villagers is the VFX Frankenstein Monster bust from FACTORY ENTERTAINMENT. The life-size bust, which comes with special sound and visual effects, is the creation of Texan Douglas Hildebrandt.

The bust includes glowing eyes, a Jacob's Ladder mad lab sound effect, and a clip from the original movie with Dr. Henry Frankenstein exclaiming: "It's Alive! Alive!"

Mr. Hildebrandt contacted MONSTER MAGAZINE WORLD and provided an exclusive, updated photo of the project (shown above) that has modified eyes that are different than the photo shown here in a previous post.

He also had this to add:: "I ... sent you a photo of a life-size Karloff Frankenstein monster I designed standing next to [my] 12,500 volt jacobs ladder. The head on the life-size figure is the same as the Factory Entertainment piece. The jacobs ladder has that classic sizzle and crackle sound to it and with that many volts of electricity running through it, it can kill man or monster at any moment."

Here is a LINK to a video clip showing the product in action.

The VFX Frankenstein is a unique addition to the world of monster memorabilia. Ask for it at your favorite monster retailer or wherever Sideshow Collectibles are sold.

Thanks again to Douglas Hildebrandt for providing this exclusive update and good luck with your creation!

THE COMPLETE FXRH!

Posted by 1001web

It was almost 40 years ago, on a warm April day in 1973, that I sat in a Hollywood theater, enthralled by the movie magic that Ray Harryhausen had once again created in the film, THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD. The cool John Philip Law Sinbad, the slave girl Margiana, played by the foxy Caroline Munro, and the uber evil of Koura, played by the great Tom Baker, all were combined and made into a superb fantasy film by director Gordon Hessler. I practically had the theater to myself that afternoon, and sat in the upper balcony, so captivated by the master movie alchemist's work that I stayed for a second showing.

I think you would agree, however, that GOLDEN VOYAGE would have been just another passable genre flick if it weren't for the genius of Ray Harryhausen.

What can you say about this guy? The moment I saw one of his movies, I wanted to do what he did, even going so far at one point, to build a few rudimentary armatures and storyboards. I had been way into Harryhausen before seeing this movie. I had even been fortunate enough to purchase a copy of the fan magazine FXRH (#4, 1974). Mind you, this was during the period when monster "how-to's" were scarcer than seeing an ape on top of the Empire State Building. But FXRH was a true fan's magazine, and covered lots of inside stuff about Harryhausen's unique craft.

Now,  ARCHIVE EDITIONS will be releasing a compilation of all four issues of FXRH in a limited edition hardcover of these sometimes tough to find and usually pricey, 'zines. Fans of Harryhausen, rejoice!

DARK SHADOWS: BOX OFFICE LIGHT

Posted by 1001web

Note to major movie studios: DO NOT open your film within 3-4 weeks of any super hero film. Disney Studios has come roaring back from its disappointing showing of JOHN CARTER with Marvel Studios' THE AVENGERS crushing its opponents . . . just like in the comics.

Consequently, Tim Burton's DARK SHADOWS ended the weekend with a disappointing $28.8 million in ticket sales -- THE AVENGERS over three times as much with $103.2 million. Demographics show that DARK SHADOWS appealed primarily to females who made up almost 60% of the audience and about 75% of the audience was over the age of 25. Guess who went to see THE AVENGERS? Kids with money and their parents, that's who.

Despite the attraction of another Tim Buron movie with Johnny Depp starring, the subject may just be a little too esoteric for theater-goers who are more familiar with super heroes these days than they are the supernatural.

ZOMBIE NATION MAGAZINE . . . REALLY

Posted by 1001web

In a page ripped right out of the book When Art Imitates Life, or I suppose more properly, When Monster TV Imitates Real-Life, imagine my surprise when I discovered the premier issue of ZOMBIE NATION magazine. What was a bit incongruous, if not slightly outrageous, is the fact that I noticed it on the same newsstand section with the guns and hunting magazines!

No kidding. There I was, at the Alderwood Barnes & Noble brick 'n mortar establishment searching out the latest in monster 'zines, when I came upon the 'zine pictured above.

I have to say I was taken a bit off guard when I started thumbing through it only to find that it views the coming zombie apocalypse as if it were real (c'mon, you know what I'm talking about, guys). An imprint of SHOOTING TIMES magazine, the only thing "giving it away" is the articles on THE WALKING DEAD. Otherwise, you'll learn just the right type of ammo to use for taking out zombies and with the best firearms, too.

Lock and load, and remember -- head shot!

HEY, EVERYBODY! I'M IN MONSTERS FROM THE VAULT!

Posted by 1001web

Pardon my fan-boy glee, but when I was invited by Jim Clatterbaugh, Editor and Publisher of MONSTERS FROM THE VAULT, to contribute to his Vincent Price memorial in MFTV #30, I was -- to put it mildly -- thrilled. Thrilled, hell. I was stoked!

To be alongside some of the great modern horror writers such as Tom Weaver and Greg Mank, as well as among some of the greatest living horror filmmakers such as Roger Corman and John Landis is -- well, somewhat indescribable.

Just a couple of years ago or so, I had the great fortune of having my comment published in the Remembering Forry tribute article in the latest re-launch of FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND (#251) -- and now this.

I don't think I have to tell you to get out and purchase a copy of the latest MONSTERS FROM THE VAULT. Yes, I've got a tidbit in there, but the rest of the issue is about as good as a monster magazine can get, folks. This guy Clatterbaugh knows classic horror.

Thanks, Jim!

A BUNCH OF MUNCH

Posted by 1001web

The Scream has made history. No, not the movie SCREAM, but the painting that inspired the killer's mask. The rare work, an 1895 pastel of "a terrified man clutching his cheeks along an Oslo fjord" by Norweigan artist Edvard Munch, sold this week, in its original frame, at a Sotheby's auction for $119.9 million.

The bidding war, which took about 12 minutes, was won by a participant on the phone, presumably an American.

A painter during the famous fin de siecle era that marked the end of 1800's romanticism and ushered in the industrial age, Munch rendered four versions of his most famous work, this one being the third that he had done.

The seller had it in his family since his childhood and remembered it being hidden from the Nazis in a barn along with a number of Munch's other works. The profits are said to be going to build a new Edvard Munch museum near the town of Hvitsten, Norway, where Munch painted.

The Scream is mainly remembered by horror fans a the mask visage that the killer, Ghost Face, wore in the eponymous movie directed by Wes Craven

A Wall Street Journal article describes the work as "a bald, skeletal figure standing at a suicide spot on Oslo's horseshoe-shaped bay where people could often hear screams from a nearby insane asylum, according to art historians. Munch's sister who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia was housed in that asylum".

The previous highest-selling work of art ever at auction was Pablo Picasso's 1932 portrait of his mistress.

HEY, EVERYBODY! I'M IN FANGO!

Posted by 1001web

The newest issue of FANGORIA (#313) has hit the stands. As usual, it's packed with loads of chewy monster goodness, including their views on the upcoming DARK SHADOWS flick (I'm still bummed about Joanathan Frid's passing, aren't you?). There's also tons of new movie reviews, interviews, as well as regular columns by the most fetching Debbie Rochon and the most fearsome Bert I. Gordon.

But, easily the coolest thing of all in FANGO #313 is a letter by a certain monster magazine blogger. And if that's not enough to get you to the nearest brick and mortar comic shop or book establishment to pick up a copy, then your zombie shamble is listing a little too far to the left, pal!

Here's the lineup of contents:

GUTS
FEATURE: “THE THEATRE BIZARRE” The shock omnibus has literally knocked out international audiences.
INTERVIEW: JENNY AGUTTER Love meant never having to say you’re furry for the “American Werewolf in London” actress.
ON SET: “MOTHER’S DAY” The setting is more civilized in this remake, but what goes on inside it sure isn’t.
PREVIEW: “THE RAVEN” Everyone loves digging into Edgar Allan Poe, especially John Cusack, playing the author as detective.
RETROSPECTIVE: “GOTHIC,” PART TWO Actor Julian Sands was willingly swept away into Ken Russell’s cinematic dementia.
INTERVIEW: MARIE WALLACE She wore many faces—most of them crazed—as she took multiple roles in TV’s “Dark Shadows.”
PREVIEW: “DARK SHADOWS”: HELENA BONHAM CARTER Her on- and offscreen partnership with Tim Burton now leads her to Collinwood.
PREVIEW: “SOUTH TEXAS BLUES,” PART FOUR More of our advance peek at Christopher P. Garetano’s “Chainsaw” comic.
PREVIEW: “DARK SHADOWS”: TIM BURTON He’s done ghosts, apes and a headless horseman, so it’s about time he tackled vampires.
PREVIEW: “DARK SHADOWS”: RICHARD D. ZANUCK A producing career highlighted by “Jaws” now sees him entering the world of fangs.
PREVIEW: “TERROR OF DRACULA” As the title suggests, this grassroots feature wants to put the fear back into bloodsucking.
INTERVIEW: RONNIE SCRIBNER As a junior “ ’Salem’s Lot” ghoul, he elicited TV terror before his teens.
PREVIEW: “TALES OF POE” Indie filmmakers Bart Mastronardi and Alan Rowe Kelly wring new twists on 19th-century stories.
DIARY OF THE DEB: “WON TON BABY!” In a Chinese restaurant, Debbie discovers some serious bad taste.
PREVIEW: “THE WICKER TREE” Robin Hardy returns to pagan territory, but this is no mere rehash of “The Wicker Man.”
INTERVIEW: PATTY McCORMACK Her perfectly evil child in “The Bad Seed” was a model for decades of bad kids to follow.
LIFE IN THE BOX: “HELLRAISER” The first installment of a multipart chat with Doug Bradley recalls his first Cenobite of Clive Barker’s mythology.
NOTES FROM THE UNDERGROUND: PATRICK REA Pulling together a feature involving a hungry monster and a raging storm was quite a “Nailbiter.”

HORROR HOSTS NO. 2 OFF THE AIR?

Posted by 1001web

I must admit I was behind the curve and just got around to ordering a copy of HORROR HOSTS AND CREATURE FEATURES #1. What I wasn't expecting was the hunt to try and find one for sale. It had mysteriously disappeared from the publishers home site, but I finally tracked one down from Dennis Druktenis Mail Order -- you know, the guy who publishes that great monster fan 'zine, SCARY MONSTERS.

After taking a look at the HORROR HOSTS AND CREATURE FEATURES blog, I found a post that explained a little as to what exactly is going on.

So, co-creators Dixie Dellamorto and Mr. Lobo are living the "Horror Geek Lifestyle". The creative team came up with a great and eclectic tribute to our favorite hosts of the horror kind in the form of a print magazine. The first issue was released some months ago. Issue #2 was in development when a few things happened that has derailed its production.

According to the post, the reason for the delay (and the eerie disappearance of Issue #1) is explained in an abbreviated version here:

First, editor Dellamorto and publisher Lobo "knew from the beginning that there may be some difficulties, which is why [they] decided not to take subscriptions."

In addition, Mr. Lobo is busy with filming 26 episodes of his syndicated TV show, CINEMA INSOMNIA.

Proposed cover of HORROR HOSTS AND CREATURE
FEATURES #2.
Also, "the magazine is a zero budget project. As you know, print is an expensive and difficult medium in these times. Horror Hosts are hit harder than most by the recession and ad sales for issue #2 are less than a third of what we were able to get for the first issue."

Perhaps most perplexing is this statement: "We had a run in with NBC/Universal who currently is fierce in their protection of THE MUNSTERS … even when it makes no sense. We were within our rights and obtained permission for all of the materials in the magazine, however we were asked to stop selling the magazine in some venues – which gives us concern for future issues." Does that make my copy a renegade?

Next comes something that never ceases to amaze me in this day of unstable computers and software: "Computer viruses in Dixie’s email left her without many of her contacts. A virus on her computer destroyed a good portion of our files for the second issue, meaning that we had to start over. With limited time and resources, this was devastating."

Dixie Dellamorto and Mr. Lobo

And finally, by the time they were done with the Elvira material, a lot happened with her, so they want fresh and current info.

They conclude with a ray of hope for us monster 'zine lovers: "All of these setbacks make this a heartbreaking affair which has made it difficult to continue working on but we are determined to put another issue out as soon as possible without compromising the quality. Horror Hosts and Creature Features may be more of a special annual or semi-annual collectors item, rather than a true monthly magazine, which we originally intended it to be. We are working on an online version of Horror Hosts and Creature Features so that we can report regularly and share with you all of the great content and original artwork that made us so proud of the first issue. We do not take you for granted and we thank all of the fans, supporters, contributors and advertisers deeply from the bottom of our blood belching hearts!

I don't want to fail to mention here one more thing -- Dennis Druktenis' Mail Order is the Epitome of Evil (hey, waitaminnit, that was Seymour's shtick!) -- er, the epitome of mail order customer service. The guy ships super fast and the package arrived in packaging so stiff I don't think our Neanderthal of a postman could have bent it to get it in our mail box if he tried. It even came with a couple of scary goodies. Mr. D is a true monster fan.

So, everyone let out your collective breath and let's hope that Issue #2 of HORROR HOSTS AND CREATURE FEATURES comes our way soon!

The terrifying "Bat Girl" from the HORROR HOSTS AND
CREATURES FEATURES blog.

MONSTERS IN THE TOY BOX

Posted by 1001web

There seems to be a never-ending flood of monster toys these days. While not as abundant as during the Monster Craze of the 1960's, monster toys have permeated many areas of the market, including model kits, figures, props and other goodies designed to separate you from the money in your wallet. Either by design or by dumb luck (I favor the former), many of these items are sold as "collectible", and have only short-run production. This creates an artificial aftermarket demand which leads to a frenzy of buyers for the next item that rolls off the assembly line.

Mezco Universal Monsters Frankenstein Action Figure

Mary Shelley's hulking fiend returns in 9-inch action figure form! Frankenstein's monster brought to life by Mezco's award-winning design team. Boasts 10 points of articulation!

Presented in glorious, hulking 9-inch tall fashion, the devilish fiend otherwise known as Frankenstein's monster has never looked better than with this Universal Monsters Frankenstein 9-Inch Action Figure! Constructed by author Mary Shelley's infamous Dr. Frankenstein from corpses, and resurrected by curious machines powered by a bolt of lightning, he ruthlessly terrorized the countryside, causing chaos among the peasantry and elite alike. Now he is brought to life by Mezco's award-winning design team! This 9-inch scale Frankenstein features a real cloth coat and shirt. His finely detailed body boasts 10 points of articulation, and he's even covered with scars from his assembly! Ages 15 and up. Suggested retail price: $28.99.

Evil Dead 2 Series 01 7-Inch Action Figure Set

The Evil Dead 2 Series 1 7-Inch Action Figure Set features the 2 versions of the beloved character Ash from the hit movie Evil Dead 2. These action figures are highly detailed, fully poseable with over 20 points of articulation and come in clam-shell packaging. Deadite Ash includes tape deck, Necronomicon book, and Linda's severed head accessories. Farewell to Arms Ash includes interchangeable right forearms, severed possessed hand, shotgun, and axe.
