FREIDA PINTO: RISE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES

WITH ABOUT AS MANY SPEAKING LINES as are usually found on the white paper strip inside a fortune cookie, Freida Pinto nevertheless cast a memorable image in the surprise summer blockbuster, RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. And how could she not? The former Miss Universe first gained international notoriety in the film SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE and it's been nowhere but up for this stunning Bollywood Beauty ever since.

The 27-year old Miss Pinto was born in Mumbai (that's the former Bombay for the geographically challenged) and she wanted to become an actress at a young age. Well, she got her chance and now this strikingly beautiful Horror Hottie is a hot Hollywood star.

"APES" BOX OFFICE NO MONKEY BUSINESS

Last week was a good week for apes. This weekend will probably see less viewers, but overall, it looks like there's enough interest to spur on the next in the prequel series.

"RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES fended off an onslaught of four new nationwide releases to top the weekend box office again. The Help won the debut dust-up, blind-siding a tepid Final Destination 5, while 30 Minutes or Less and Glee The 3D Concert Movie floundered.

Descending 49 percent, Rise of the Planet of the Apes packed $27.8 million. Though steep, the sci-fi thriller's second weekend slide was less severe than Planet of the Apes (2001), I, Robot, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and X-Men: First Class, among comparable titles. With a $105.2 million haul in ten days, Rise is tracking ahead of fellow 20th Century Fox prequel/reboot X-Men: First Class ($98 million) and has out-grossed most of its key comps through the same point, aside from the last Planet remake's $123.7 million (or $174.2 million normalized for ticket-price inflation)." "RISE" GOES APE AT THE BOX OFFICE

I will reserve my review (but not my enthusiasm) for a little later after seeing this FREAKIN' AWESOME film this weekend. Suffice to say, it is a movie worthy of joining the franchise with pride. MONSTER MOVIE WORLD's highest recommendation!

"Rise of the Planet of the Apes climbed to the top with an estimated $54 million on approximately 5,400 screens at 3,648 locations, which ranked as the fifth highest-grossing August opening ever (but ninth normalized for ticket-price inflation). Among comparable movies, the franchise reboot's launch was superior to District 9's $37.4 million and Terminator Salvation's $42.6 million and close to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra's $54.7 million (on the same weekend in 2009). It even grossed more than I, Robot's $52.2 million (though sold fewer tickets) and was just a hair lower than X-Men: First Class's $55.1 million earlier this summer.

Though Rise was beneath Planet of the Apes (2001)'s $68.5 million ($96.5 million adjusted for ticket price inflation), that was to be expected considering it didn't cover the franchise's most iconic territory and was essentially a remake of one of the fractionally popular sequels, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. Rise also had to overcome a ten-year franchise dormancy and the taint of audiences' mixed reaction to the Planet remake, but it was propelled by an on-point marketing campaign that packed plenty of ape thrills and recalled recent successes like I, Robot, District 9 and even Avatar. Distributor 20th Century Fox's exit polling indicated that 54 percent of Rise's audience was male and 56 percent was age 25 years and older."

This weekend the latest in the PLANET OF THE APES film franchise is being released, RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.
