Vee: One of my primary concerns is whether or not I'll wake up next to Jaime's carcass. Often times I'll startle from slumber in the middle of the night and touch him gently on the arm, only to find that it's ice cold. I shift closer, trying to hear any tell-tale breathing.
But I suspect he enters a kind of torpor when he falls asleep because, without medical equipment, it's impossible to detect any signs of life whatsoever.
At this point I generally panic and jab him forcefully in the eye until he wakes up.
He always does, and I breath a sigh of relief.
It's also handy that he doesn't actually remember when he wakes up in the night- in fact, he can have whole conversations, complete with responses and planning, that will be entirely forgotten in the morning.
I'm not even sure he realizes I engage in the eye-poking ritual most nights.
She would come to bed and fall asleep after me, she would be up and awake well before me, and whenever I awoke in the night she'd be completely cognizant and alert. I wondered if she even slept at all, or if she had made some dark pact that enabled her to forgo it entirely.
